Spotlight Writer: Stella Weir

Senior Stella Weir first became interested in writing in middle school when she was given creative writing assignments.

“You could express your ideas instead of following a formal essay structure. Creative writing opened an adventurous path one could pursue to express emotion and experiences,” Stella said.

Since middle school, Stella has become more interested in essay writing as it also allows her to express what is on her mind. She said that amidst all the stresses of her senior year, writing her college essay allowed her to reflect on the last few years and her future plans after high school.

“In her college essay, she clearly demonstrated a sense of humility and passion, involving herself in an interest [musical performance] that proves she desires to be part of something larger than herself,” English teacher Mr. Bryan Pol said.

Stella’s biggest inspirations are her parents, as they impacted the way she sees the world.

My parents have always inspired me to look at the world in different ways through music, art and books.

“My parents have always inspired me to look at the world in different ways through music, art and books,” Stella said.

Some of the most impactful things on her writing career were her great aunt’s poetry and John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men.” Both things have made her realize the power well-written works can have on a person.

Stella was a member of the poetry club in middle school but never took any formal writing classes in high school. She is looking forward to participating in writing classes in college.
