Students from a variety of art classes submitted pieces to the Scholastic Art & Writing competition, winning a total of 25 awards with 18 different students receiving awards. Their artwork was due Feb 29, and the winners were announced March 15.
Senior Eunice Choi won an American Vision Award, seven students won Gold Keys, six students won Silver Keys and six students received honorable mentions.
Choi also won four Gold Keys. Seniors Charlie McClain, Scarlett Weir, Olivia Porter, Michaela Velez and sophomores Angela Olsen and Maya Zhivkovich also won Gold Key awards.
Seniors Caroline Curtin, Samara Garcia, Madeline Oyer, Carlos Mendoza, Christa Cirello, Mia Evans, Ashley Ganly, Marisol Mojlca, juniors Rolzin Jones, Peyton LaRocco and freshman Rhapsody Morgan also took home awards.
“Art is very subjective, and it doesn’t have an exact right or wrong answer. Thus, whether you win an award or cannot define the true value,” Choi said. “But winning an art award definitely helps your artistic career, sadly. An art award is one of many ways to prove yourself as an advanced artist.”
Award-winning pieces aren’t made overnight though. One of Choi’s pieces, ‘Departure,’ which was a part of her summer work, took from mid-June to the end of October to complete. Most of her time was spent brainstorming the piece, trying to depict a message, finding the right colors and getting the composition right.
Choi’s art career isn’t over yet. She plans to continue creating her pieces at University of Pennsylvania.
