Ceramics teacher Mrs. Mella Tusinean and art teacher Mrs. Tricia Kaylor organized the annual Empty Bowls event on Dec. 18. The event took place during all lunches where high school staff were able to enjoy a soup and bread lunch, while also taking home a student made ceramic bowl or mug.
As part of the fall curriculum, all five Ceramic 1 classes were assigned to make two bowls or mugs. One was donated to the Empty Bowls fundraiser and the other was made to take home. In past years, the teacher had to make the executive decision whether the students were making bowls or mugs, but this was the first year where students could create either.
To prepare for this event, ceramics students were asked to donate soup that would be served during the lunch. Local restaurants also contributed to the variety of soups that were provided.
The lunch took place in Dr. Irene Lantz’s room, which was decorated for the occasion. Here teachers and staff enjoyed their soup lunch and made their suggested donation of $10-$15. They then got to select which ceramic mug or bowl they would like to take home with them.
The money raised goes directly to the local food pantries in Matamoras, Milford and Dingmans.
In years past, the amount of money raised ranges from $600-$1,000.
Mrs. Kaylor feels it is a great part of the curriculum.
“It is important for the students to participate in a service project and give back to the community, and they might even be helping their peers” said Mrs. Kaylor. “They are learning how to do good will with course work.”
This event takes place on all types of college campuses, churches and communities. This is the 14th year the school has participated.
