The first ever group signing day took place on Feb. 5 in the Media Center. This was a decision made between administration, the athletic department and guidance. They all wanted to make this an event that students and families could look forward to.
Group signing day included a mix of student athletes who are continuing their athletic careers in college.
Tables were set up in the Media Center in three rows. On the Smartboard next to the tables, they portrayed the athletes who were there, the school they signed with and what sport they are going to be playing at the collegiate level. Each athlete’s signing session took about 3-5 minutes.
“I liked seeing where everyone was going and their accomplishments. It was nice having all the teachers and coaches in one spot,” senior Ashlynn McCardle said. “It was a good experience and I liked seeing all the athletes as one.”
High school principal Mr. Lou DeLauro plans to do another group signing event in the spring for new commits or those who couldn’t attend this one. Over the summer, he will see which improvements he can make for the future, and he will also speak with other districts to see how they run their events.
“There are several schools that have done this, and it is something we want to continue to do,” Mr. DeLauro said. “We want to improve and grow along the way.”
Eleven athletes and their families were involved in this event.
Athletic director Mr. Sean Giblin expressed how convenient the group signing was.
“I think it’s a neat experience to have the kids together, and it ensures that both staff and coaches were able to attend,” Mr. Giblin said.
Numerous staff and students expressed positive feedback regarding the event.
