“SOS Deluxe: LANA” by SZA dropped Dec. 20 after a year of teasing the album.
SZA first teased the album on her Instagram on Dec. 10, 2023. She posted a picture of her in a field captioned “LANA.” Fans were expecting her to release “LANA” in spring of last year, but SZA only dropped “Saturn,” the lead single.
This album is the deluxe version of “SOS,” an album SZA released Dec. 9 2022, and includes 38 songs.
Out of all 15 deluxe tracks, some of my favorites are “BMF,” “Love Me 4 Me,” “Kitchen” and “Drive.” I love the instrumental on “BMF” and the way she sings “Kitchen” is beautifully done. I love how personal she is on the album, especially on the songs “Love Me 4 Me” and “Drive,” which makes it easier to relate to her.
The album has one feature by Kendrick Lamar on “30 For 30.” I love when SZA and Lamar work together, but I am not the biggest fan of this song. I do not think this song lives up to their other collaborations like “All the Stars” and “luther.”
The deluxe tracks sound completely different from the standard edition songs. The deluxe tracks are more R&B and coffee shop sounding whereas on “SOS,” the songs were more hip hop.
SZA’s name is Solana Imani Rowe, but growing up she went by Lana, which was the inspiration for the album’s title.
In addition to collaborating on music, SZA is set to go on the “Grand National Tour” with Lamar this summer. The two will be going to cities across America and have one show in Toronto. SZA and Lamar also performed together at the Super Bowl Halftime Show on Feb. 9.
This album has been one of my favorite listens, and I am so glad she finally released these angelic songs.
