Sources of Strength is a peer-driven awareness group that promotes mental health and positivity within the school.
The club reinforces this idea and the importance of having tools and staff at students’ disposal.
They aim to remove the stigma that is associated with mental health issues and raise awareness.
“If you see someone struggling, tell someone,” guidance counselor Mrs. Molly Blaut said. “We are here as a school community to help each other get through and rise above adversity.”
The benefit of this program is that it acts as an opportunity for students to get to know the high school staff, open up and become more secure in themselves and their mental health.
Sources of Strength had aired another promotional video on May 27, in hopes of recruiting more people and spreading awareness of the club.
They plan to stick post-it notes with inspirational messages on walls and mirrors of bathrooms, and spread their program to middle schoolers, in hopes of making them more successful and involved in the program in their high school years.
For junior Julie Hopper, Sources of Strength is an outlet for her to let people know it is okay to have a bad day.
“You don’t have to share everything with everybody,” Hopper said. “If you want to share a little bit here and there and not talk about your mental health, that’s fine too.”
Anyone interested is more than welcome to join and participate in this program.
There is a Schoology code that students can access through the videos promoting Sources of Strength and students can ask Mrs. Blaut, Ms. Amy Letwinsky or Dr. Diana Bixby for additional questions.
