This Day in History: First animal taken to space
On this day, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 2 spacecraft, and a Siberian husky named Laika with it. Laika survived for a few hours before dying of overheating and panic. Several other dogs were similarly sent into space, until enough information was gathered to send the first man into space in 1961.
