On this day, 1884, the monument dedicated to the first President of the United States was completed. Construction began on July 4, 1848, and was stopped six years later due to low funds and the outbreak of the Civil War. Construction resumed in 1876. In total, the monument amassed 555 feet in height and consisted of a combined 36,000 blocks of granite and marble.
