New Jersey Senator Cory Booker set out on a historical 25 hour and five minute speech in protest of President Donald Trump’s administration and policies.
Booker broke Senator Strom Thurmond’s filibuster record of 24 hours and 18 minutes, which was in protest to the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Booker began his speech on March 31 and continued into the evening of April 1.
According to the U.S. Senate, this was not a filibuster because Booker was not attempting to prolong debate, or block a bill or nomination. Instead of this was he was trying to make a speech to shed light on how the new administration’s policies have affected his constituents and other citizens across the country.
During his speech Booker did not sit, eat or use the restroom.
He pledged to disturb “the normal business of the United States Senate for as long as I am physically able.”
The senator from New Jersey highlighted the lawlessness and undermining of American values of the Trump Administration, according to NBC News.
During his marathon speech Booker read numerous stories of retired Americans who depend on Social Security for their daily living costs and he vowed to protect it.
“I tell you I am going to fight for your social security. I’m going to fight to protect the agency. I’m going to fight against unnecessary cuts against the service it gives,” Booker said.
He also vowed to protect medicaid and medicare programs, paid family leave, the department of Veterans Affairs and financial security.
