On this day, 1924, archaeologist Howard Carter and his group unearthed the sarcophagus of Egyptian Pharoh Tutankhamen. The sarcophagus had a stone exterior and contained three coffins within each other. The third and final coffin containing the young Pharoh’s mummified body was made of solid gold. At the time of discovery, the body had been preserved for roughly 3,000 years within the tomb.
