Golden Globes’ host faces backlash

On Jan. 7, the 80th Golden Globe Awards was broadcasted live at 5 p.m. on streaming services all over the country. This year’s Golden Globes was hosted by Jo Koy, an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is mainly known for his comedy specials and now, for his poor job at hosting the Globes. There were lots of online viewers who were not fans of Koy’s jokes and how unprepared he was for being both a host and comedian.

From the beginning of the night, Koy’s jokes failed to impress the audience, and he was unable to set the mood for the night. As expected by many, it wouldn’t be hard to host the Golden Globes especially with that many people in the room, but what he has been faulted for is his misogynistic jokes. Two jokes that made viewers most disappointed were his hits at the “Barbie” movie and Taylor Swift.

“The big difference between The Golden Globes and the “NFL”? Koy asked. “At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”

Swift’s fans were not happy with the event or the situation. Koy’s other joke about the “Barbie” movie definitely got more attention and fueled anger for more viewers.

“Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and “Barbie” is on a plastic doll with big boobies,” Koy said.

Greta Gerwig, the director of “Barbie,” Margot Robbie who played Barbie, Ryan Reynolds who played Ken, and many others in the audience had similar reactions that showed they were unentertained with his joke. The point of the “Barbie” movie was to show how women are treated and what is expected from them in the real world, and Koy’s joke just proved the movie’s point and message.
