Ceramics teacher Mrs. Maria Tusinean organized the 15th annual Empty Bowls event on Dec. 16. Ceramics 1 students contributed handmade bowls and mugs to the fundraiser that took place in art teacher Dr. Irene Lantz’s room during all lunches. The event was open for all staff members to enjoy soup and bread for lunch, as well as getting to take home a student-made mug or bowl.
Each student made two bowls or mugs, picking one to bring home and giving one to the Empty Bowls fundraiser. Around 200 ceramic pieces have been made each year. This event originated in Michigan and was meant to raise money for people in the community who do not have enough food. The school adopted the idea in hope to help the struggling community in any way they can.
Mrs. Tusinean enjoys seeing the differences reflected between each student’s art.
“Every time I look at the ceramics, I see new personalities,” Mrs. Tusinean said. “I recognize the difference in generations when I see each piece of creativity.”
Each staff member who comes to the event is encouraged to donate between $10 to $15 to go toward the fundraiser. The money is split among three food pantries located in Dingmans, Milford and Matamoras.
Mrs. Tusinean wants to improve on staff participation and wants more people to enjoy this event.
“On that day, the work gets to be enjoyed,” Mrs. Tusinean said. “I’m proud of my students for what they do and all the time they put in.”
